Changes to maternity leave

Jan 29, 2010

The Government has confirmed its plans to allow parents to share a mother’s maternity leave. The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills plans to allow mothers who return to work to transfer their unused maternity leave to the father. This would entitle fathers to take up to six months’ paternity leave, of which three months would be paid, and three months unpaid. Currently, fathers are entitled to just two weeks paternity leave. Under the Government’s proposals, the new scheme would take effect from 3 April 2011.
